Emezi, Emezi, where have I’ve been all your writing life? This novel “You Made a Fool..,” was my first read by the author and I am appalled I waited this long to experience her art. From the start of this story I was hit with some spicy, non rated PG, jaw clenching action and to be honest I thought it was someone dreaming because no way this book starting like this. Come on I know I wasn’t the only one thinking this. This point on I could not stop reading.
The journey the author takes you on with these colorful characters is one you never experienced before. Feyi is for the culture, she is unhinged in what she wants, she is expressive, she is a goddess, she is Emezi’s creation. Joy seems to be every reader’s best friend and home girl for life and the men are just God’s perfect creation that a girl can only dream about. In all this beauty, is mess. Just all out reality tv, soap-opera, Tyler Perry plot twist mess ! This is what makes reading this book exciting.
As popular as this book is, many dwell and make it’s messiness the source to read this book. I do not want to make this review about the messiness because it was really about beauty. The author, in such a unique and creative way, gave us beauty in every aspect. From the description of the characters, to the details of Alim’s house, to the beauty of black art, to the beauty of someone’s past. Beauty can be define as a combination of qualities that pleases the intellect or moral sense. Every chapter incorporated beauty from beginning to end. The cliche saying is beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that goes for reading too. Sometimes you have to go beyond surface reading and really get the application in which the author is writing. Emezi writing is beautiful, her story is beautiful, her art is beautiful and her talent is absolutely beautiful.
